The University was established as Stalingrad Medical Institute in 1935. Volgograd State Medical University currently has around seven hundred and sixty three able instructors and professors which include 11 qualified academicians, 96 top notch professors and 401 associate professors. 
The University comprises 66 departments in total in which about 5000 Russian students along with 900 students from India and 70 other international students take classes. More than 70 internationally acclaimed doctors teach postgraduate students in the University. Since 192 more than 3000 international students from different medical fields have been trained at the University.
The University has been training international students since 1962. Since 2000, it has been teaching foreign students in the English language.
